SOUTHERN ONTARIO PACKET RADIO ASSOCIATION - SOPRA
Southern Ontario Packet Radio Association (SOPRA) was founded by a group of digital mode experimenters in the early eighties. The organization was formalized as a not for profit Ontario corporation on 18 June 1987. The objective of SOPRA in the early days was to experiment, advocate and advance the new and evolving amateur digital modes. The organization was an early adopter of new packet switching technologies and grew a network of Packet Radio digipeaters (digital packet radio repeaters). As the AX.25 and upper layer networking (TCP/IP, NetROM, #) standards became widely adopted throughout the U.S. and Canada, SOPRA created and maintained a network of VHF (145.01) and UHF (441) user ports interconnected by a 221MHz backbone. Today SOPRA operates APRS, NETROM, and TCP/IP packet radio systems under the call signs VE3CON, VE3INF, VA3OSH, VE3PKG, VE3TDS, and VE3YAP. |
